What are Fruits?
Fruits are the edible fleshy part of a tree or a plant that contains seeds. They come in different colors, flavors and taste. Some are sweet, sour, or bittersweet. Fruits provide the body with the required nutrients for the efficient running of the body system.
Types of Fruits
There are basically 8 types of fruits:
These usually develop from the ripening of a single ovary of a flower. Simple fruits are chiefly of two types: dry and fleshy. Dry simple fruits can be dehiscent or indehiscent. Coconut, hazelnuts, strawberries, walnuts are examples of dry simple fruits. While fleshy simple fruits are the ones with partial or full fleshy pericarp at maturity. Examples of such include tomato, olives, cherry, plums, cranberry, and peach.
These fruits develop from multiple ovaries of a single flower. There are four main types of aggregate fruits, including follicles, achenes, drupelets, and berries. Some good examples include raspberry, blackberry, and custard apple.
Multiple fruits come from an inflorescence, meaning a cluster of flowers. Each of these flowers individually births a fruit and the fruits, on maturity, come out in the form of a single mass. Examples are figs, mulberry, pineapple, figs, and others.
Berry is a type of simple fruit as it develops from a single ovary of a single flower. Cranberry and blueberry are the two most common examples of berries.
An accessory fruit is any fruit whose edible part is from the ovary as well as other parts of the flower. An accessory fruit can be simple, multiple, or an aggregate in classification. Pineapple, stone fruit, apple and strawberry are good examples.
